Rooted in Craft
I’m Sunyatta Amen, founder of Calabash Tea + Tonic, 5th Generation Master Herbalist, and a holistic interior designer creating soulful spaces for more than 30 years. I design homes and feel good spaces that look beautiful, work hard, and feel like an exhale the moment you walk in.
That lineage still guides everything I do. I believe a space should hold you, reflect you, and support the life you are actually living.
I know my way around a real renovation
I go far beyond styling pillows and calling it a day. I grew up assisting my master carpenter grandfather in the field and in his workshop, so construction has always been part of how I see design. From full renovations and rehabs to thoughtful refreshes, I work comfortably with contractors, carpenters, painters, and installers to bring every moving part together for a result that feels elevated, functional, and built to last.
For me, good design is not just beautiful. It should also add real value for how you live now and for resale, rental, or long term investment later. Pretty is nice. Pretty and smart is better.
Design that feels good
Whether I’m refreshing a room or reimagining a space from the studs up, my goal is always the same. I want it to feel as good as it looks.
I draw on grounded design principles, natural materials, organic texture, and timeless systems like the I Ching and Vaastu to guide flow, balance, and the way a room holds you. Nothing fussy. Nothing forced. Nothing that only makes sense on social media. Just thoughtful design choices that make a real difference in how you live.
From homes to high vibe spaces
I go far beyond styling pillows and calling it a day. I grew up assisting my master carpenter grandfather in the field and in his workshop, so construction has always been part of how I see design. From full renovations and rehabs to thoughtful refreshes, I work comfortably with contractors, carpenters, painters, and installers to bring every moving part together for a result that feels elevated, functional, and built to last.
Whether the project is deeply personal or beautifully public, I bring the same care, curiosity, and hands on problem solving to every detail. I love a gorgeous finish, but I also love a floor plan that behaves itself.
Why it matters
To me, healing does not stop at the teacup. It lives in the colors you wake up to, the textures under your feet, the materials you touch every day, and the way your space welcomes you when life is lifeing.
That’s the heart of Sunyatta Style. Design with soul, story, and substance.
If you’re ready to create a space that restores, reflects, and inspires, I’d love to help bring it to life.
